Kate Burridge











Kate Burridge is Professor of Linguistics at Monash University and Fellow of both the Australian Academy of the Humanities and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. Her main areas of research are language change (focus on changing vocabulary and grammar), the notion of linguistic taboo, the structure and history of English, popular perceptions of language (and fall-out). She has authored / edited more than 25 books on different aspects of language. Kate is a regular presenter of language segments on radio and writes for The Conversation; she was a weekly panelist on ABC TV’s Can We Help (2007-11) and has given a TEDx Talk Telling it like it isn’t.

Debbie de Laps (MA Language and Literacy) began teaching VCE English Language in the pilot program in 1998. She was VCAA Chief Assessor and Exam Panel Chair for a decade, as well as a classroom teacher and professional development leader for VCE English Language teachers over 25 years. Her interest in the subject, and passion for linguistics, has led to her co-authoring this latest editions of Love the Lingo and Living Lingo, first published in 2009/2010 and an enduring favourite with students and teachers alike.










Isabelle Burke is a postdoctoral research fellow at Monash University and a member of an Australian Research Council project investigating Australian English slang (https://auslanguage.net). Isabelle completed her BA (Hons) at Monash University in 2013, winning the University Medal for Undergraduate Academic Excellence. She completed her PhD in linguistics in 2017 and has worked at Monash as a teaching and research associate in the linguistics program since 2014.
